Five things to do when lockdown ends

One year on from the start of the pandemic, COVID-19 restrictions are slowly being eased and lockdowns are being lifted once again. With freedom at our fingertips, what can we do once lockdown ends?

Visit family and friends

Hugs are back! Reunite with friends and family

Household mixing has been illegal since November, with exceptions for support bubbles. Groups of six are currently permitted to meet outdoors, including in private gardens or public parks. Additionally, from 17 May, up to six people or two households can meet indoors, whether that’s for a catch-up or a birthday gathering. Families will be able to reunite at last and social distancing guidelines will be updated around this time too, so hugs might be on the cards…

Have a drink in your local pub

Pubs are starting to re-open indoors and outdoors

Hospitality businesses have had it incredibly tough this year, with tier restrictions in particular stopping them from opening fully or requiring customers to order a substantial meal along with their drink. However, from 12 April, pubs with outdoor seating have been able to open their beer gardens to the public, and from 17 May they will be able to open for indoor dining. Help a pub out and visit your local for friendly service and refreshing pints!

Go to the cinema

Treat yourself to some popcorn at the cinema

Cinema visits are something we all took for granted once upon a time, and the big screens have been shut for months. New films have been pushed back, and I’ve certainly missed the popcorn and pick n mixes that came with every visit. However, 17 May is vastly approaching and from then onwards cinemas are able to open, with films such as Peter Rabbit 2 and Cruella being released shortly after the reopening. Vue’s rules currently state that face masks must be worn inside the cinema unless you are eating or drinking.

Have a gym session

Working out can improve mental and physical wellbeing

Working out is something that a lot of us have grown to appreciate since the beginning of lockdown, when only one piece of exercise a day was permitted. Walks, runs and even yoga have become popular hobbies, keeping the nation active and improving our general well being at the same time! Gyms have been open since 12 April, with some offering contactless entry and self-cleaning stations, meaning your safety is always a priority.

Have a staycation

The Lake District is a great UK destination

Although rules around international travel are yet to be confirmed, UK-based hotels and B&B’s will also be reopening on the 17 May, so why not have a weekend break in a stunning destination such as Cornwall, the Lake District or the Cotswolds? Lockdown has shown us the true beauty of our surroundings, and we don’t have to travel far to see it! Whether you opt to stay in a caravan, hotel or cottage, a UK holiday is bound to lift your spirits.
